Hubert KILIAN

Statement Dust of Flowers

"Dust of Flowers" is a colored fiction—an exploration of a past I never experienced, yet deeply yearn to understand. Over the last four years, this project has evolved into an investigation of an imagined Taiwan of the 1970s and '80s, a time shrouded in memory and marked by the absence of concrete documentation. Faced with this uncertainty, I’ve set out to reconstruct a fleeting version of that lost era, drawing inspiration from the subtle remnants of history that still linger in Taipei’s urban landscape.

In this work, "dust" functions on both a metaphorical and literal level. It is not nostalgia that drives this project, but rather a creative fiction built upon the textures and colors that still reverberate from the forgotten corners of the city. These traces - dusty walls, rusted surfaces - serve as conduits for a dialogue with Taiwan itself.

"Dust of Flowers" is not solely a quest to revisit the past, but rather an artistic inquiry into the invisible threads that bind me to it. Through photography, I seek to capture the poetry of color and texture - elements that evoke the essence of a pre-electronic era and its unique, fading charm. This vision is crafted from the imagination, shaped by a dream of a world that might have been, or might never have existed.

Hubert KILIAN is a French journalist based in Taipei from 2003 to 2016. His photographic journey began in 1996, driven by a desire to capture the shadows cast by cities and the marks left by time on walls. Since then, he has dedicated his work to exploring the relationship between inhabitants and the environments that shape and transcend them. Through his lens, he reveals the urban rhythm, often imbued with solitary atmospheres, a stage for obsolete modernity, and a sense of nostalgia. Hubert’s photography seeks to expose the dramatic potential of the passing spectacle of time and people, set against the enduring presence of stones and structures.

Taipei, with its elusive beauty, has become one of his primary subjects. This moody city is not easily revealed at first glance, and Hubert’s work strives to uncover its hidden depths. His photography has been showcased on various French, Canadian, and Taiwanese television programs and publications. He has exhibited his work in France, Japan, and Taiwan.

In 2018, Hubert published“Visages de Taipei ”(now sold out), followed by“Le Ventre de Taipei” in 2022, and“Bougies d’allumage”in 2024 (also sold out).
